With focus, comes strength

*
Writer's note:
-I assume each season of the show represents roughly one year's time of passage. In the present, Siren is in her early 20's, putting her in this flashback at around 15-16. Yes she is a blank flank at that time.

-
My headcanon for Luna's personal guard was that while she was imprisoned on the moon, her Guard went into a state of hiatus.
I also differentiate between a Royal Guard who works at night (a Night Guard), and the more specific Lunar Guard, who are Luna's personal body guards. After Luna's banishment, the Lunar Guard didn't have anyone to protect and their unit shrank in numbers.  Most of these individuals went on to pursue other life purposes. However, a select few of loyal family lines within this guard volunteered to pass down their legacy to each generation, in perperation for the return of Princess Luna, and revive this honorable duty. And these Lunar Guardsponies were known for their strict warrior culture, trained from an early age.

-This Lunar Guard never witnessed the transformation of Luna into Nightmare. In the show we saw during the flashback that Celestia banished Nightmare Moon with no witnesses to observe her transformation or banishment.  Through the centuries, the story of what happened to Luna evolved from historic fact, to word of mouth myth (Kind of like how no one's ever heard of it in the pilot episode). Eventually, these loyal Guardsponies reached a social status that we (on Earth) would associate to something akin to warrior monks. A duty greater than their own lives.

Siren was born into the generation which would welcome back a Princess who was lost to time.  No pressure, right?

But wait, Danger, then why is Siren attacking Luna now if she was trying to be one of her guards only 5 years ago!?

That is exactly the question I want you to ask ;)
*********************************

It goes without saying that this page took a lot longer to develop. It's my second longest page so far, and I haven't done backgrounds of this detail yet (or lighting) before. For someone who doesn't do landscapes often, they're not perfect, but I'm very happy with them :D

Who's Dive Siren's mother?
I'm going to make up a character sheet to explain her in detail.
But her name is Gotha, inspired by the Gotha Model V Night Bomber of the First World War, used by the Germans of the Central Powers.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotha_G.…
Her design was a challenge, which also added some time >_>

There are 3 references to music, television and film in this page!

Star Wars, Clone Wars. 2003 line. Grevious under Dooku, one of my favourite scenes in Star Wars history.
Mind you, I like the animated 2003 series waaaaay better than the CGI one that came later under the same name.

um, the green bat pony said " I'm sorry I'm not the son you wanted mother." but then pages down the gray one ( the mother) sais " looks to the world around you my daughter". I'm confused. Is that a BOY pony or a GIRL pony.

She's saying it with a tone, because she knows her mother wanted a son and not a daughter. Ergo, "sorry I'm literally not A son like you wanted".

Wasn't sure how else to word it I suppose in a text format, but I can see how there might be confusion. :-/

ok, though, that sounds kinda like her mother is disappointed in her. Well, now that you think about it, I can see some people around the world being that heartless.

Eeeeyup, exactly! And Siren has just as much contempt for her mother as you might imagine (considering her situation here at least)

I suppose the reason for that is that back then they believed in a world where Luna would rule over Celestia but her change of heart somewhat angered the Batponies who see other ponies as inferior or something.

Hey Danger! Nice page as always! Buuut... I think you messed up Sirens gender in this one. At the beginning, ( I´m assuming her ) mother describes Siren as her daughter. However, Siren describes herself as "not the SON you wanted". Soooo intentionally or did something go wrong? :D

Oh no that's right. She was referring to the fact that her mother wanted a son not a daughter. Siren knows this and isn't very happy about it. Which is sorta why Siren cuts her hair short, and doesn't maintain a feminine appearance.

I can see though the confusion haha. This was a tricky page to write :P

Well, that seems like a good way to raise a well-adjusted daughter.

Seriously, though, what need has the Lunar Guard for tactics of surprise attacks and psychological warfare? Attacking isn't exactly their job. It seems to me like you're training a pretty awful bodyguard, and anyway she's probably going to come out of this unstable enough that no elite unit will take her. Or at least no officially sanctioned one.

Art of War.
Over compensate to account for any possible vulnerability.  Siren here isn't a very strong individual, as her mother points out. To make up for it, she'll need to gain the advantage in a fight via other means. Think Joker to Batman. Joker can't fight Batman 1v1 via pure strength, yet he's a notorious opponent because of his asymmetrical psych warfare.

Lunar Guards to me are a kind of spec-ops unit, trained for both Defensive and Offensive roles. In peacetime, there's no need for offensive measures of course. But that doesn't mean they aren't trained otherwise, in my head at least ;).

And yea, Siren's got a very unhealthy relationship with her mother. xD

Dive Siren is attacking Luna? That wasn't depicted in this page or the last one. We see her on the move, but we don't see her doing anything with Luna, and why would we ever assume must be attacking Luna? I thought she was going after the bad guys.

In the last page Siren is beginning a dive towards her, and in the very first panel on this page, you can see her flying towards her. I painted her very small to increase the distance of the scene, but I may have painted her "too" small as well so you may have missed her up there.

I reference her allegiance to being on the "bad side" in earlier pages.

And Siren is inspired by diver bombers, which begin their attacks by diving headfirst to their targets.

Luna is just offscreen, but in the path of Siren's trajectory from the first panel.

Woot woot!  Tis is awesome that you completed this page and it is an excellent build up for the character, Siren!  I don't blame you about the studying.  Anatomy 2 was a killer, but succeeded on the exams, although not as well as I wanted too.  Keep up the excellent work and don't neglect the studies, even though you have a bunch of fans that would like to see and know more!

*edit*  I feel like I should expand on the comments by saying that through the whole flashback, you have added alot of clear and cleaver details in the whole scene.  It was very descriptive with the teaching of the techniques and try and fails of Siren without being too much.  Excellent story telling here!

Thank you! I'm actually very appreciative of the feedback, as this was a tricky page to design/write/organize, especially when I plan on a page being this long. It has to be cohesive and self contained. I can see from some other comments that something might have gotten lost in translation so to speak with my structure. Which is something I am trying to take an active effort to keep an eye out for.

Maybe they missed something I thought I was clear on?
Or maybe I got too close to the story, and only assumed I was clear?
Either is fair to point out.  It's a learning process.

But for the most part, it seems I was able to communicate everything I wanted to: Siren had a less than nurturing relationship with her mother xD

There's going to be more flashbacks for Siren for sure to explain more of her. If there's anything I want to avoid, is motivationless villains. twilight sparkle (smile) plz

Honestly, I really thought that everything flowed very well.  I enjoyed the transitioning scenes of the teaching/scolding and the actions.  I do realize that everyone is different, but I really thought that the scenes, dialog and actions were planned out very well and drawn nicely.

I cannot say.  I thought you had done things clearly.  But it is a good idea to take any suggestions from others and possibly see what you could do better.

Often times in stories, it's better to flesh out the reasons and whys of the villains to create a memorable story.  I often enjoy little debates and arguments over the best RPG villain, at least in the PlayStation and before era of games.  Between Kekfa of Final Fantasy 6 and Luca Blight of Suikoden 2.  I am in the Luca Blight camp due to the whole story and back story of his character.  He may not have the power to destroy the world, like what Kekfa did, but Luca Blight is so much more of a better villain with his backstory and his lack of 'god-like powers'.  I am not sure how familiar with those two games, so I won't bore you.  I just want to encourage you to continue.

Side note I am successfully back in to the military as of today.  I have a goal and it will be a long and difficult journey for me.

Ah yes, I pull most motivations for villains from film, and there's a specific few Siren is inspired from. Those won't be probably noticeable for quite some time though haha. >_<

And that's great to hear! Stay in touch for sure if you can. I've meet so many service men and women in this fandom, so I'm aware of how intense things can get Twilight Sparkle (i do not know) plz

Thanks much!  And that is good to hear about other fellow soldiers checking!  My path isn't going to be easy in attempts to become an officer, but it'll be safe.  I'll be needing to serve as a Combat Medic for a couple of years first.

Awesome coloring and look to this comic! It is some stunning stuff. I love the dark IDW pony stories and this actually is superior to them. Also your dialog is great! If this was a graphic novel I would just have to have it! You do some incredible stuff. The hoof blades are very cool.

Well credit must be given:
The hoof blades I (think) were an idea I first saw from Equestria-Prevails

And thanks! I admittedly like to use portions of the comic to stretch some of my poetry muscles.
That being said though, I did sprinkled a few quotes in here from some sources I draw inspiration from as an homage to them x-3
